Gray Fox, Urocyon cinereoargenteus, is a full time resident of The Sea Ranch. He is believed to be one of the oldest creatures on earth. His remains have been found along with those of Giant Sloth and that puts his family tree back some three and a half million years. He is all over the Ranch, but is reticent to be seen and does most of his foraging at night. The best time to see him is in the twilight hours although he is out and about at dawn if you happen to be one of those folks who get up early.

Gray Fox is an omnivore - he prefers meat, but he will eat just about anything. At the same time, he is very conscious of his figure and maintains a very lean, svelte appearance. It is not a very scientific description, but we think of Fox as something of a cross between Cat and Dog. Fox has long strong claws and can climb trees. He has a great sense of balance and we have seen him run on branches less than two inches in diameter. It appears that others think of him as part Cat and part Dog too, because his offspring are sometimes called "pups" and sometimes "kits."

It is impossible to trace all of the myths, legends, and folklore that involve Fox. He is everywhere in the back story of all of us. Usually wise, frequently quixotic, always sly, he is universally known, but infrequently seen. He is quick and cunning, and always sly as a fox. These qualities have him tending toward the illicit in life and some cultures associate him with evil. Modern America sees the seductive in Fox.
