Phalarope

Phalarope

Scientists take titillating delight in telling us that Phalarope is a species in which the sex roles are somewhat reversed. The females are a bit larger and more brightly colored than the males and take more of a lead in deciding who partners with whom. Apparently there is a lot of girl fights over who gets which boy, but all of that happens way up north. We don't have any of that kind of shenanigans going on here in The Sea Ranch. Another fascinating aspect of this amazing creature is the way he sometimes hunts for food. He swims as fast as he can in a tight circle and creates something of a vortex that pulls food to the surface where he then feasts. For this reason, the literati refer to a flock of Phalarope as a Swirl or a Twirl of Phalarope.

If you like a good read from the age of sail you might try the Bolitho series of novels by Alexander Kent (Douglas Reeman). When Richard Bolitho makes Post Captain, the frigate that he commands is the HMS Phalarope. Post Captain was the heart of the British Navy and their frigates were the muscle. Those fighting ships were not named lightly.

Phalarope is a staunch supporter of the feminist movement..
