Song Sparrow

Song Sparrow

The experts tell us that Song Sparrow sings to attract girls and also to lay claim to a particular turf. They also tell us that Song Sparrow frequently has as many as twenty different songs in his repertoire. He usually improvises variations while singing a particular tune - sometimes as many as a thousand versions! He learns his song from other birds living in the same general area, but subtly makes it his own, thus his mate knows his voice from all of the others that she might hear. Song Sparrow has no imitators outside his own kinfolk - not even Blue Jay is up to the task.

"I see that the sparrow cheeps and flits and sings adequately to the great design of the universe; that man does not communicate with it, understand it's language, because he is not one with nature. I reproach myself because I have regarded with indifference the passage of the birds; I have thought them no better than I."
Henry David Thoreau
