Clintonia is a member of the Bellwort family of plants and is named in honor of DeWitt Clinton who was a prominent nineteenth century American politician and naturalist. As Governor of New York, he was a key figure in getting the Eire Canal constructed. The species name, andrewsiana, honors another nineteenth century naturalist by the name of Dr. T.L. Andrews who is believed to have been the first naturalist to collect the plant.

Here in The Sea Ranch, you will find our deep red Clintonia in our deep green forested areas. It will be in bloom from May to July. Although the leaves are large, the flowers are tiny and you are going to have to look closely to fully appreciate their beauty. Fortunately, the very small cluster of blooms sits at the end of a tall stalk which helps somewhat. After the blooms are done, small blue berries appear in their place. The berries are as bright as the flowers are vivid.

Clintonia is almost as unknown as it's namesake and that is too bad on both counts.
