The Hobbit is a very comfortable, very interesting, and extremely imaginative architectural jewel set on the edge of the redwood forest, high up on the eastern ridge of The Sea Ranch. The creators of this unique masterpiece, Gary Hansen and Ed Winer, conceived of their home as being composed of "three living pods connected with a covered bridge." One enters the Hobbit by way of a short path through huge redwood trees to a suitably modest door, and then climbs a staircase to the very center of the home. You are on the 'bridge" and you can see all of the major elements of the structure. The ceiling of the entire length of the "bridge" is glass with views past the tree tops to the sky beyond. To the right is the living room, to the left is the kitchen and straight ahead is the dining room. There are no interior walls, and each space is defined by what it contains. Comfortable seating in the living room, first class culinary appointments in the kitchen, and a beautiful dinner table in the dining room. In the very center is a circular gas fireplace. There is a large television set in the living room. Look to the side and you find a small nook with desk and chair suitable for updating a diary or writing a grocery list. Turn your head and look over your shoulder down the length of the bridge and you will find a most inviting bedroom with a large window in the wall over the bed looking out into the forest. The glass ceiling of the bridge carries through the bedroom so that you can count the stars before you drift off to sleep. There are two bathrooms, one in the bedroom and one off of the bridge. Everywhere you look, windows take your gaze out into the surrounding trees and down to a blue water view of the Pacific. A small deck outside French doors in the kitchen has table and chairs for outdoor dining as well as a hot tub. The Hobbit has free domestic and worldwide telephone service and is pet friendly. To say the very least, this is a home to stir imagination and fantasy. Both Tolkien and Rowling would love the place! You might think twice about your reading list for this particular vacation stay.

When it is time to go explore, you are in prime position to wander in the redwoods or take a hike down the hill to the ocean. You will find both to be invigorating and worthwhile and you should keep your eyes open for wildlife. The two explorations will provide a great deal of variety and, if you are very lucky one evening, you just might see one of Albus Dumbledore's owls.
$477 two nights, $1,256 seven nights. Please add $15 per pet, per day.
