Zen House, an award winning Carson Bowler design, is not like anything you have ever experienced before. Local legend has it that the home was built in accordance with the principals of feng shui, the very ancient system that has been used for millennia to optimally orient a structure so that it receives positive energy. We don't really know anything about that, but the layout of this retreat is definitely unique. Envision a perfectly square building with a square vestibule in the very center. Radiating out from the central space are the various rooms - a living area; two bedrooms, each with it's own bath; the kitchen and dining area. The main entrance is on the northern side of the home while numerous other doors lead out to intimate walled gardens and exterior decks. Outside the home there are various chairs, swings and a table to enjoy all through the day and into the evening. The perfect place for a morning cup of coffee, an alfresco lunch, or perhaps an evening libation under the stars.
Views from the home are spectacular. Sunrise over the ocean from the master bedroom and sunset over the ocean from the dining area. The decor throughout the home has a definite Oriental flavor and there are some wonderful art accents ranging from a one-of-a-kind photographic mural in the living area that depicts the world without any cloud cover to antique chests from Goa, paper-mache sculptures from Haiti and a stone anchor from India. A wood-burning fireplace in the living area provides atmosphere and the outrageously comfortable furniture offers plenty of places to curl up with a good book or a loved one. The entertainment system is the very best with large flat screen television sets that simultaneously present the same programs in the living and dining areas. The bedrooms have their own flat screen sets and there is a Play Station 3 in the guest bedroom. Guests can rent movies using their iTunes account or enjoy a library of music and movies that is available at no charge. Needless to say, there is WiFi available throughout the home and domestic telephone service is free of charge. The well-equipped kitchen has a glass cooktop, a conventional oven and three convenient refrigerator drawers. There is also a bar-b-cue, of course. The home is heated centrally and the thermostat not only controls the temperature throughout the home, but will also provide you with the five day weather forecast if you so desire.
When it is time to go exploring, a very short private path leads directly to the bluff top trail with ten miles of the Northern California coast to discover. Like we said in the beginning, this is no ordinary house. It is a sophisticated blend of ancient principals and modern technology. $706 two nights, $1,886 seven nights.
